Humiliated
and afraid of the reactions for his having acted proudly,
the king of the
demigods took hold of Govinda’s feet. With unabashed
enthusiasm
he then coronated Govinda as Lord of the cows by having Mother
Surabhi bathe Him
with water from the celestial Ganga. From the water of that
bathing manifested
Govinda-kunda, which, I hope, will always be visible before
my eyes.

 This is the celebrated kunda
that was created when King Indra performed the bathing ceremony (abhiseka) of Lord Krishna. Indra became angry with the inhabitants of
Vrindavana who had stopped the Indra-yajna on the advice of Krishna, and he sent
devastating rainfall to Vrindavana to punish the Vrajavasis. But when he saw Krishna
lift Govardhana Hill just like an umbrella he understood he had made a big
mistake: he had foolishly challenged the authority of Krishna, who was none other
than the Supreme Personality of Godhead playing like an ordinary child in the
transcendental land of Vrindavana.
In order to satisfy the Lord, Indra came here with the celestial cow
Surabhi. Accompanied by all the demigods of heaven, they performed a wonderful
bathing ceremony of Lord Krishna and worshipped Him with all the paraphernalia fit
for a King.
First Surabhi, the celestial cow, bathed Lord
Krishna with her milk. While
Indra’s elephant carrier, Airavata, bathed Indra with water from his trunk.
Indra then bathed Lord Krishna with water from the Ganges, and one by one all the
demigods, headed by Lord Brahma and accompanied by their mothers, bathed the
Lord. The accumulated water from the bathing ceremony created this sacred kunda,
which became known as Govinda-kunda.
